SCHOOL RECYCLING PROGRAM.

organization, and motivation, your school can turn that large amount of paper waste into new
products by recycling it.

1. Advertise the program

A.) Talk to students and teachers, have an announcement, put up posters or write about the
meeting in your school’s website.
B.) Let people know that you want to start recycling.
C.) Explain at the meeting that you are looking for motivated people to start recycling.

2. Organize

A.) It is important to get many different people involved in the recycling program, including the
students, the principal and most of all the school custodians. The custodians are the ones who
usually deal with the trash, so you will need their help in operating the program and to make
sure the recyclable paper is kept separate.

3. Assign Roles

A.) You will need to know who will perform parts of the program examples are.

1. Who collects the paper
2. What will be recycled
3. Where the paper will be kept
4. When should it be done

4. Make Decisions

A.) Decide how many recycling bins you will need, how the paper will be sorted, where the bins
will go, and how you will pay for them.  Fundraising can help cover the costs of new bins, or
leftover cardboard boxes are always an inexpensive option.
B.) Decide how often the paper will need picked up.  Options could be once a week, twice a
week, one a month twice a month.  Make sure you have a location at the school to keep the
paper if there are not frequent stops.

5. Educate

A.) Educate every one which would include the students, teachers, and staff about the new
recycling program, put out fliers and brochures, do presentations.  Also, tell everyone about
products the paper becomes once it is recycled.

6. Track The Successes

A.) Track your paper weigh or keep a general count so that you can enjoy your success.  If
things are not going smoothly, investigate what is causing problems and try to resolve the
issues.

7. Extra Cash

A.) Have fun, the money could be used for new recycling bins, a school recycling party, given
to the custodians for their help in sorting the paper, or any other school activity.  This part is
all up to the students, enjoy.

8. Have Fun and Keep Recycling

A.) Try and make sure the schools recycling is not dependent on one or two people, that way
its easier to keep the recycling ongoing each year.
B.) Do not forget to let people know about what your school is doing and thank them for being
a part of it.
